Your name
The University is committed to creating a truly inclusive environment for our students throughout their time at the University of Exeter and beyond and as such you will be able to record a preferred name alongside your legal name in the University Student Record System.
We have created a document that will show how name details are recorded in university systems: Student name principles document
Legal name
Your legal name will be printed on formal University documentation such as letters and award documentation. To change your legal name please log your request through SID Online under the Name Change category and attach a copy of your passport, identification certificate or other legal documentation showing your correct full name.
Preferred name
You will also be given the option to edit your preferred name during registration. The preferred name will be displayed on University systems and can be different to your legal name if so required. Should you wish to change your preferred name you can do so through the Student Record System without any documentation.
It is important to note that your preferred name (if different from your legal name) will not appear on formal documents issued by the University such as confirmation of study letters or award documentation.
Pronouns
You will given the option to select or edit your preferred pronouns through annual University registration at the start of each academic year. If you would like to change your preferred pronouns after this point you can do so through the Student Record System.
Gender
To make changes to your legal name and gender information confidentially please contact Student Administration Operations Manager for support. You will also find support on our LGBTQ+ student support website.
